Imagine standing before the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas, breathing in the crisp mountain air. Now imagine doing it in soaked sneakers or without a warm layer during a freezing night. Trekking in Nepal is one of the world’s most rewarding adventures—but packing wrong can quickly turn your dream trip into a challenge.
With over 15 years of experience guiding treks across Nepal, we at Himalayan Magic Treks have seen it all. Whether you're heading to Everest Base Camp or exploring the serene trails of Mardi Himal, this comprehensive guide tells you exactly what to pack for trekking in Nepal in 2025. No guesswork, no overpacking—just expert-tested advice.
Nepal's trails span a variety of altitudes and climates. From chilly mornings in the Khumbu to sun-soaked afternoons in Annapurna, layering and having the right equipment ensures comfort, safety, and enjoyment.

Kathmandu and Pokhara have well-stocked gear shops. You can easily rent or buy:
Down jackets
Sleeping bags
Trekking poles
Crampons (for winter treks)
This can save weight if you're on a multi-country trip or unsure about investing in high-end gear.
Pack light but smart. Porters typically carry up to 15kg per trekker.
Test your gear before your trip—especially boots and backpack.
Layer smart: Avoid cotton and go for quick-dry, moisture-wicking fabrics.
Weather varies by trek: A trek like the Gokyo Lake Trek will require more warm gear than a lower-elevation trek like the Pikey Peak Trek.
Altitude, season, and region affect what you pack. Here's a quick overview:
Region | Notable Treks | Extra Packing Tips |
---|---|---|
Everest | EBC, Gokyo, Three Passes | Cold-weather gear, UV protection |
Annapurna | ABC, Circuit, Mardi Himal | Layers for changing elevation |
Langtang | Langtang Valley | Moderate cold gear, water treatment |
Mustang / Dolpo | Upper Mustang | Wind protection, sun sleeves |
