What Makes It Special
Unlike popular trails, the Upper Mustang Trek leads you deep into a restricted region once isolated from the world. With special permits and experienced local guides from Himalayan Magic Treks, you’ll access hidden valleys, ancient royal cities, and sacred landscapes that few travelers ever see. This is not just a trek, it’s a cultural expedition into a living museum of Tibetan heritage.
Step into a realm where ancient Himalayan culture still thrives untouched by time. The Upper Mustang Trek is a 16-day journey that takes you deep into Nepal’s remote trans-Himalayan desert, a starkly beautiful region once part of the ancient Kingdom of Lo. Your adventure begins in the lush mid-hills of Pokhara, with a scenic flight or drive to Jomsom, the gateway to Mustang. From there, the landscape transforms dramatically, lush valleys give way to arid cliffs, red-walled canyons, and endless mountain horizons reminiscent of Tibet.
As you make your way northward through Kagbeni, Chele, and Syangboche, you’ll walk through windswept plateaus, cross high-altitude passes, and visit centuries-old Buddhist monasteries, chortens, and cave dwellings carved into the cliffs. The crown jewel of the journey is Lo Manthang, the walled capital of the former Mustang Kingdom, where you’ll have a full day to explore narrow alleys, royal palaces, and sacred temples with deep Tibetan influence.
Along the way, you’ll stay in traditional teahouses run by welcoming locals from Tibetan-descended ethnic groups such as the Loba. Expect crisp air, dry conditions, and elevations ranging from 2,800m to over 3,800m. The trek is moderate in difficulty, with 5–7 hours of walking per day, and is carefully paced for safe altitude gain. Our itinerary includes rest stops and cultural immersion, ensuring a balance of physical challenge and meaningful connection with the land and its people.
Himalayan Magic Treks manages every detail, from permits to guides to logistics, so you can focus on soaking in the vast, spiritual landscapes. Whether you're drawn by the mystery of the “forbidden kingdom,” the stark Himalayan beauty, or the unique Buddhist culture, the Upper Mustang Trek offers a transformative adventure unlike any other in Nepal. You’ll return not only with stunning photographs but with profound memories of timeless trails and mountain hospitality.
Upon your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, one of our team members will welcome you and escort you to your hotel in a private tourist vehicle. A pre-trip briefing will be conducted where you’ll meet your trekking guide and team. This is your time to clarify questions and prepare for the days ahead.
Early in the morning, we’ll drive to Pokhara via a comfortable tourist bus. Enjoy views of terraced fields, rivers, and green hills along the Prithvi Highway. Pokhara, the scenic lakeside city, is your gateway to the Annapurna region.
Catch an early scenic flight to Jomsom, the windy valley of Lower Mustang. Upon arrival, we’ll drive to Kagbeni, a beautiful village located at the gateway to Upper Mustang. Spend the rest of the day exploring the ancient alleys and Tibetan-influenced architecture.
Today begins with a scenic drive to Samar village. From there, you’ll hike up to the sacred Chungsi Cave Monastery nestled in a cliffside, an important meditation site linked to Guru Rinpoche. Continue trekking uphill to Syangboche before driving to the beautiful village of Ghami.
Begin your day with a trek to Ghar Gompa, one of the oldest active Tibetan monasteries in Nepal. The trail crosses semi-arid hills and offers panoramic mountain views. After exploring the spiritual and historical significance of the gompa, continue trekking to Charang, home to a historic fortress and red-walled monastery.
A short but scenic drive will take you to Lo Manthang, the walled capital of the ancient Kingdom of Mustang. Upon arrival, wander through narrow alleys and soak in the traditional whitewashed mud-brick houses.
Spend the day exploring this historical and cultural treasure. Visit centuries-old monasteries like Jampa, Thupchen, and Chode. If desired, take an optional hike or jeep excursion to Chhoser Cave dwellings (sky caves), offering dramatic views and a glimpse into ancient life.
Leave the capital behind and trek toward the village of Yara. The trail passes through desolate landscapes and unique rock formations. As you descend toward Yara, take in the rugged beauty of Upper Mustang’s terrain.
Today includes a visit to Luri Gumba, one of Mustang’s most sacred and remote cave monasteries, believed to date back to the 13th century. The murals inside are ancient and deeply spiritual. After your exploration, return to Yara for the night.
This is one of the more challenging yet rewarding sections of the trek. Cross multiple passes and enjoy spectacular views of the arid Mustang region. The trail is remote and quiet, ending in the charming village of Tangye.
Another long and scenic trekking day leads you across high ridges and through wild terrain to Tetang. The remoteness of this route offers a sense of solitude and untouched wilderness.
Trek towards Muktinath, a revered pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Buddhists. Visit the sacred temple complex and marvel at the 108 water spouts, eternal flame, and nearby monasteries.
After breakfast, drive to Jomsom and take a scenic return flight to Pokhara. The rest of the day is free to relax or explore Pokhara’s peaceful lakeside and enjoy a comfortable rest.
This day is reserved as a buffer in case of flight cancellations from Jomsom due to unpredictable mountain weather. If not required, enjoy a leisure day in Pokhara with optional sightseeing or boating.
We’ll return to Kathmandu via tourist bus. The scenic journey offers one last chance to reflect on your Upper Mustang adventure. Once in Kathmandu, enjoy your final evening with a farewell dinner or last-minute souvenir shopping.
We will transfer you to Tribhuvan International Airport as per your flight schedule. Depart with lifelong memories of the hidden kingdom of Upper Mustang and the professionalism of the Himalayan Magic Treks team.
Introduction
The Upper Mustang Trek offers one of the most unique and culturally rich trekking experiences in Nepal. Known as the "Last Forbidden Kingdom," Mustang is a high-altitude desert region that was off-limits to outsiders until 1992. The trek is known for its dramatic landscapes, ancient Tibetan culture, and fascinating monasteries. During this 12-day journey, trekkers will experience the mystical charm of the Tibetan Plateau while passing through remote villages, caves, and monasteries, all set against the backdrop of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges.
Best Time to Trek
The best time for the Upper Mustang Trek is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons. These months offer stable weather conditions with clear skies, making the trekking experience more pleasant. The temperature can drop to sub-zero levels in the higher regions, so it's important to be well-prepared for the cold.
Difficulty Level
The Upper Mustang Trek is considered moderate to challenging. It involves walking at high altitudes (reaching over 4,000 meters) and passing through dry, rugged terrain. The trek is well-suited for trekkers with previous trekking experience and good physical fitness. Acclimatization is crucial during this trek to avoid altitude sickness, and the journey is designed to allow for proper acclimatization at key points.
Accommodation
During the trek, accommodation is primarily in local tea houses and lodges that provide basic but comfortable amenities. The rooms are typically simple with a bed, a blanket, and shared bathroom facilities. In the more remote areas, the accommodation may be more basic, but the warm hospitality and traditional environment make up for it.
Food
The food provided during the trek is typically Nepali and Tibetan in style, with staple dishes such as dal bhat (lentils and rice), momo (dumplings), thukpa (noodle soup), and Tibetan bread. Most tea houses also offer a range of snacks, tea, coffee, and hot chocolate. Vegetarian meals are available, and trekkers can expect hearty meals to keep them energized throughout the trek.
Trekking Permits
A special restricted area permit is required to enter Upper Mustang, which is a part of Nepal's Trans-Himalayan region. The permit must be obtained through a licensed trekking agency (like Himalayan Magic Treks). The trekking team will take care of all the necessary paperwork to ensure a smooth and hassle-free experience.
Cultural Insights
Upper Mustang is a region that has remained largely unchanged for centuries. The local people, mostly of Tibetan descent, still practice traditional lifestyles and follow Tibetan Buddhism. During the trek, you will visit ancient monasteries such as the Lo Gekar Monastery and the famous Tiji Festival (if your trek aligns with the festival dates). You’ll also experience the hospitality of the local people and their unique way of life in this remote corner of Nepal.
Packing Tips
While the trek does not require extreme technical skills, it does require careful packing. Make sure to bring warm clothing, especially for the cold nights at high altitudes. Essentials include a down jacket, thermal layers, sun protection (sunglasses, sunscreen, hat), a good pair of trekking boots, and a sleeping bag (if not provided by the tea houses). Don't forget your personal items such as a camera, water bottle, and trekking poles.
Communication and Connectivity
While trekking in Upper Mustang, the connectivity is limited. There is no reliable mobile network in remote areas, but some tea houses may have satellite phones for emergency communication. Internet access is also limited, making it the perfect trek to disconnect and immerse yourself in the stunning landscapes and peaceful surroundings.
Safety and Health
The trek requires good physical fitness and the ability to adjust to high-altitude conditions. We highly recommend having travel insurance that covers trekking at high altitudes, including emergency evacuation. The trekking team will carry a basic first aid kit, and an oxygen cylinder is kept as a precaution for altitude sickness. However, it’s essential to keep yourself hydrated, avoid overexertion, and listen to your body to ensure a safe trekking experience.
Altitude Sickness and Acclimatization
Trekking at high altitudes requires proper acclimatization. The trek itinerary is designed with rest days to allow your body to adjust to the changing altitude. Symptoms of altitude sickness include dizziness, headache, and nausea. If any symptoms appear, inform your guide immediately, and the trek will be adjusted accordingly. It’s important to follow your guide’s instructions regarding pacing and rest.
Environmental Responsibility
Upper Mustang is a delicate region with fragile ecosystems, and we emphasize the importance of respecting local customs and preserving the environment. We encourage trekkers to minimize waste, avoid using plastic bottles, and follow the Leave No Trace principles to protect this pristine environment.
