Trekking Permits In Nepal

Introduction: Before You Lace Up Your Boots—Don’t Forget Your Permits

Planning a trek in Nepal? Along with boots, backpacks, and excitement, you’ll need something equally important: trekking permits. Whether you’re headed to Everest Base Camp or the serene trails of Annapurna, understanding which permits you need can save you time, money, and hassle.

In this guide, we break down Nepal's trekking permit system: what they are, where to get them, how much they cost, and which treks require which permits. As a trusted local operator with 15+ years of experience, Himalayan Magic Treks makes the process seamless for you.

Why Permits Are Required for Trekking in Nepal

Nepal’s permit system is designed to:

  • Ensure the safety and registration of trekkers

  • Fund trail maintenance and conservation

  • Support local communities and development

Permits also help track footfall in sensitive or restricted areas. And yes, trekking without them can lead to fines or denied entry at checkpoints.

Key Trekking Permits in Nepal

1. TIMS Card (Trekkers' Information Management System)

Who Needs It: All trekkers (except for restricted areas)

Issued By: Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) and Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal (TAAN)

Cost (as of 2025):

  • NPR 2,000 (~USD 15) for Group Trekkers (through licensed agencies)

  • NPR 2,000 (~USD 15) for FIT (Free Individual Trekkers)

Where to Get It:

  • NTB office in Kathmandu or Pokhara

  • Through your registered trekking agency (like us)

Purpose: Tracks trekker details for safety and records

4. Restricted Area Permits (RAP)

Certain areas in Nepal are designated as "restricted" and require special permits issued only through registered trekking agencies. Examples include:

Manaslu Circuit:

  • Sept–Nov: USD 100 (first 7 days), then USD 15/day

  • Dec–Aug: USD 75 (first 7 days), then USD 10/day
