You're finally ready to trek in the Himalayas, explore temples in Kathmandu, or enjoy a jungle safari in Chitwan. But before you step foot in this breathtaking country, there’s one important thing to sort out first: your Nepal tourist visa.
Thankfully, getting a visa for Nepal is simple, affordable, and accessible to most travelers. Whether you prefer to apply online, on arrival, or through an embassy, this guide—based on our 15+ years of experience helping global trekkers—will walk you through every step.
At Himalayan Magic Treks, we believe your adventure should begin the moment you land—not in a long immigration queue. Here’s everything you need to know about getting a tourist visa for Nepal.
Most foreign nationals can enter Nepal by obtaining one of the following:
Visa on Arrival (at Tribhuvan International Airport or land border points)
Online Visa (Pre-Arrival Application) via the Nepal Immigration website
Visa through Nepali Embassy or Consulate (for countries not eligible for VOA)
Let’s break down each option below.
Tribhuvan International Airport (Kathmandu)
Major land entry points: Kakarbhitta, Birgunj, Bhairahawa, Nepalgunj, Dhangadhi, Mahendranagar
Valid passport (at least 6 months validity)
1 passport-sized photo (digital kiosks available at airport if needed)
Completed arrival card
Completed online tourist visa form (can fill at the airport or in advance)
Visa fee in cash (USD preferred)
| Duration | Visa Fee |
|---|---|
| 15 Days | USD 30 |
| 30 Days | USD 50 |
| 90 Days | USD 125 |
You can extend your visa later if needed (more on that below).
The process typically takes 15–30 minutes, depending on traffic. Lines can be long in peak trekking seasons, so consider completing the online form in advance to save time.
Nepal now offers a pre-arrival online visa application, making the on-arrival process quicker.
Nepal Department of Immigration – Online Visa Application
Fill out the online form within 15 days before arrival
Upload a passport-sized photo and travel details
Print the submission receipt with barcode and bring it with you
Present the receipt at the visa payment counter at the airport
👉 This method is highly recommended if you're arriving during high season (March–May or Sept–Nov), especially if heading to treks like the Everest Base Camp or Annapurna Base Camp.
If your country is not eligible for a visa on arrival, or if you prefer to travel with the visa already stamped in your passport, visit your nearest Nepali embassy or consulate.

“I was a bit anxious about the Visa on Arrival process, but it was honestly super easy. I filled out the online form on the plane, landed in Kathmandu, paid USD 50 in cash, and got the visa within 20 minutes. The staff were friendly and helpful. Couldn’t have been smoother!”
