What To Pack For The Annapurna Base Camp Trek

Packing for a Himalayan trek can feel overwhelming—especially if it’s your first time. What kind of boots do you need? Do you need a sleeping bag? How many layers are enough?

We’ve guided thousands of trekkers on the Annapurna Base Camp Trek, and the right packing list can make or break your journey. With our 15+ years of experience at Himalayan Magic Treks, we’ve created this comprehensive, season-proof guide to help you pack with confidence.

Whether you're doing the 10-day classic route or the 7-day short version, this checklist ensures you stay warm, dry, and comfortable on the trail.

Why Packing Right Matters

The Annapurna Base Camp Trek reaches 4,130 meters, crossing diverse terrain—lush forests, alpine meadows, stone staircases, and snowy ridgelines. Temperatures can swing from 25°C in the lowlands to -10°C at night near base camp.

Packing light but smart is key. Overpacking adds unnecessary weight. Underpacking leaves you exposed to the elements.

That’s why we’ve broken down your gear into essentials, season-specific items, and optional extras.

Essential Gear for Annapurna Base Camp Trek

Trekking Basics

  • Backpack (40–50L) – with rain cover

  • Daypack (15–25L) – for water, snacks, and daily items

  • Duffel bag – if using a porter (we provide one)

👞 Footwear

  • Trekking boots – broken-in, waterproof, ankle support

  • Camp shoes/sandals – for teahouse use

  • Wool-blend trekking socks (3–4 pairs)

  • Liner socks – for blister prevention

🧥 Clothing (Layered System)

Base Layer:

  • 2 moisture-wicking t-shirts

  • 2 thermal tops & bottoms (merino or synthetic)

Insulation Layer:

  • 1 fleece or down jacket

  • Sun hat or cap

  • Neck gaiter or buff

  • Lightweight gloves + insulated gloves

Sleeping Gear

  • Sleeping bag (rated -10°C to -15°C) – or rent in Kathmandu

  • Sleeping bag liner (optional, for extra warmth)

  • Earplugs (teahouses can be noisy)

Toiletries & Personal Care

  • Quick-dry travel towel

  • Biodegradable soap

  • Toothbrush & toothpaste

  • Sunscreen (SPF 50+)

  • Lip balm with SPF

  • Wet wipes

  • Hand sanitizer

  • Toilet paper (not always available in teahouses)

  • Feminine hygiene products (if applicable)

  • Small first aid kit (band-aids, painkillers, blister care)

Water & Hydration

  • 2 water bottles (1L each) or 1 hydration bladder

  • Water purification tablets or filter (Steripen, LifeStraw)

Staying hydrated is critical for altitude adaptation.

Accessories & Electronics

  • Headlamp with extra batteries

  • Power bank (charging may cost extra at teahouses)

  • Plug adapter (type C, D, or M for Nepal)

  • Camera or smartphone with storage space

  • Trekking poles (foldable preferred)

  • Sunglasses (UV-protected)

  • Zip-lock bags (for electronics, snacks, and wet clothes)

Snacks & Nutrition

  • Energy bars or trail mix

  • Extra passport photos (2–4)

  • Cash in Nepali Rupees (NPR) for hot showers, WiFi, snacks

Seasonal Add-ons

Depending on when you go, adjust your packing accordingly:

For Spring / Autumn:

  • Mid-weight fleece layer

  • Gaiters (optional for dusty trails)

  • Lightweight down vest

For Winter:

  • Heavier down jacket

  • Thermal socks & hand warmers

  • Microspikes (in case of icy trails)

  • Insulated water bottle cover (to prevent freezing)

For Monsoon (June–August):

  • Full rain gear (jacket, pants, backpack cover)

  • Waterproof shoes

  • Leech repellent spray or salt

  • Quick-dry clothing

Practical Packing Tips from Guides

  • Roll clothes instead of folding to save space

  • Use packing cubes or dry bags for organization

  • Always carry essentials (jacket, snacks, passport) in your daypack

  • Don’t bring valuables—keep things simple

  • Laundry is possible in lower villages but unreliable above 2,500m

What You Don’t Need to Pack

  • Tent or cooking gear (you’ll stay in teahouses)

  • Multiple books (bring a Kindle instead)

  • Extra-heavy toiletries (keep it light)

  • Too many clothes—you can re-wear layers
