Packing for a Himalayan trek can feel overwhelming—especially if it’s your first time. What kind of boots do you need? Do you need a sleeping bag? How many layers are enough?
We’ve guided thousands of trekkers on the Annapurna Base Camp Trek, and the right packing list can make or break your journey. With our 15+ years of experience at Himalayan Magic Treks, we’ve created this comprehensive, season-proof guide to help you pack with confidence.
Whether you're doing the 10-day classic route or the 7-day short version, this checklist ensures you stay warm, dry, and comfortable on the trail.
The Annapurna Base Camp Trek reaches 4,130 meters, crossing diverse terrain—lush forests, alpine meadows, stone staircases, and snowy ridgelines. Temperatures can swing from 25°C in the lowlands to -10°C at night near base camp.
Packing light but smart is key. Overpacking adds unnecessary weight. Underpacking leaves you exposed to the elements.
That’s why we’ve broken down your gear into essentials, season-specific items, and optional extras.
Backpack (40–50L) – with rain cover
Daypack (15–25L) – for water, snacks, and daily items
Duffel bag – if using a porter (we provide one)
Trekking boots – broken-in, waterproof, ankle support
Camp shoes/sandals – for teahouse use
Wool-blend trekking socks (3–4 pairs)
Liner socks – for blister prevention

Staying hydrated is critical for altitude adaptation.

Travel insurance (must cover altitude up to 5,000m)

Depending on when you go, adjust your packing accordingly:
Mid-weight fleece layer
Gaiters (optional for dusty trails)
Lightweight down vest
Heavier down jacket
Thermal socks & hand warmers
Microspikes (in case of icy trails)
Insulated water bottle cover (to prevent freezing)
Full rain gear (jacket, pants, backpack cover)
Waterproof shoes
Leech repellent spray or salt
Quick-dry clothing
Roll clothes instead of folding to save space
Use packing cubes or dry bags for organization
Always carry essentials (jacket, snacks, passport) in your daypack
Don’t bring valuables—keep things simple
Laundry is possible in lower villages but unreliable above 2,500m
Tent or cooking gear (you’ll stay in teahouses)
Multiple books (bring a Kindle instead)
Extra-heavy toiletries (keep it light)
Too many clothes—you can re-wear layers
